Charleston, S.C. – The College of Charleston cross country teams make a return trip to New Market, Va., for the CAA Championships on Saturday. The men's 8K begins at 10 a.m. followed by the women's 6K at 11.
The Cougars previously competed at the New Market Battlefield course on September 14 as part of the JMU Invitational. James Madison is also serving as the host for Saturday's meet.
Junior Tess Masselink starred at last year's meet when she turned in a second-place finish, tied for the highest by a Charleston woman at a conference championship. Micky Kawhol was the runner-up at the Trans America Athletic Conference meet in 1991.
Masselink's time of 21:16.1 a year ago in Farmingdale, N.Y., places her third in school history in the 6K, and she holds five of the top 25 times at that distance.
Cate Ambrose will look to improve her standing in the Cougar record book. The junior enters Saturday's meet ranked tenth in the 6K with a time of 22:19.2, also set at last year's CAA Championships.
Freshman Rhian Purves will also seek a top finish after leading the Cougars three times in four regular season meets.
The top men's returner from last year's meet is senior Hayden DiBona, who finished 32nd with a time of 25:41.8. DiBona is second in school history in the 8K with a mark of 24:53.78 set at the Pirate Invitational in 2017 and holds six of the top 25 marks overall.
Seniors Sam Beattie and Evan Peirce and sophomore Jack Wedge each finished between 35th and 41st at last year's CAA Championships. Beattie is fifth in school history in the 8K, running a 25:17 at the Royals Challenge in Charlotte last October.
