Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ford's 18th Double-Digit Performance Not Enough As Charleston Falls To Elon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team closed out a four-game Colonial Athletic Association homestand with a 72-52 loss to Elon on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena. Deja Ford was the lone spark for Charleston, finishing with 12 points for her 18th double-digit scoring performance of the 2018-19 season.

The Phoenix (8-14, 3-8 CAA) opened the game on a 13-5 run, Tyler Collins grabbing her first three of the game early as Charleston failed to keep pace with Elon's offense.

The Phoenix continued to roll offensively into the second, Lexi Mercer finishing the first half a perfect 7-7 from the floor, 5-5 from deep, for 21 points. Charleston (7-15, 3-8 CAA) responding with a 7-0 run capped by Huff's 'and one' layup.

Latrice Perkins brought defensive energy from the bench, stealing and finishing a layup for her first basket of the game but Elon pushed their lead to 10 coming out of half-time.

The teams exchanged baskets until the visitors used a 6-0 run before the media timeout to push their lead to 48-33, Ford hitting 12 points with a steal and fast break layup for her 17th double digit performance of the season.

Elon used another offensive burst to increase their lead to 20, a tough offensive third quarter by the Cougars seeing them score eight eights.

The offensive struggles continued early the fourth. Huff finishing the game 0-8 from deep, her streak of 27 games with at least one basket from three coming to an end, with Charleston finishing just 2-20 from beyond the arc.

Dee Heath provided a spark from the bench at the midway point of the quarter, grabbing six points in limited action, with Perkins adding two jumpers in the final two minutes of play. Charleston finished the game on a 7-0 run with Cailin Dorsey knocking down a three as the clock expired.

Charleston now looks to a road weekend at James Madison and Towson on Friday and Sunday. Tip is set for noon in Harrisonburg, Va., against the Dukes with Sunday's matchup slated for a 2 p.m. tip in Towson, Md.

Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"Anytime you only score eight points in a quarter and let them run off 25, it's going to be hard to come back from... Everything that I look at on the stats sheet is pretty even... Kudos to them [Elon], especially [Lexi] Mercer for rattling off 21 in the first half, we did a good job of shutting her down in the second but we have to put the ball in the hole... We start getting stops and we then we have to score and convert... If we're not hitting, you have to be more defensive minded, amp up your defense... That's when you band together a little more... The fourth quarter, we did it, we were much better in the fourth quarter, but we need to put together a full 40 minutes."
