Savannah Huff, Jenna Helberg Spark Cougars Past Dartmouth

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Savannah Huff drove in the first three runs of her career, and Jenna Helberg came through with a pinch-hit double in a five-run fourth to power the College of Charleston to a 7-6 win over Dartmouth at the Holy City Showdown.

The Cougars (6-7) recorded a season-high 15 hits including four by Yari Felix to match her career high first set against Duke last year. Dexlie Inman added two doubles, and Madi Brown also had two knocks to aid the Charleston attack.

The Cougars erased a 4-2 deficit on the strength of a five-run outburst in the fourth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Felix had an RBI single and Brown lofted a sacrifice fly to tie it up. A hit by Chandler Sparkman reloaded the bases, and Helberg brought home two when she boomed a double over the head of center fielder Taylor Ward.

Huff capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to give Charleston what turned out to be a key insurance run when the Big Green tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh. Drayton Siegling came in to pitch with  one on and one out and induced a sparkling 6-4-3 double play to earn her first career save.

Dartmouth put together three straight two-out hits in the first to take a 2-0 lead, but Huff tied it in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single for her first career RBI. The Big Green again produced a pair of two-out runs in the fourth before the Cougars rallied in their half of the frame.

Kylie Burke relieved starter Summer Jenkins and retired the final two batters of the third with a runner in scoring position. She went on to work 1.2 innings and picked up her first win of the season.

The Cougars finish tournament play Sunday at 11:15 a.m. against UMass Lowell.
