Huff Hits 1,000 Career Points At Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Darien Huff became the 12th member of the College of Charleston women's basketball team 1,000-point club as The College fell to Hofstra on the road on Friday evening in Colonial Athletic Association play.

Huff, a senior guard from Elizabethtown, Ky., joins the list of 11 other Cougar greats to reach the career milestone in the Division I era, also becoming the 27th all-time member which includes the pre-NCAA era (1974-91), TAAC era (1991-98), SoCon era (1998-13) and CAA era (2013-Pres.).

Despite the career milestone for Huff, Charleston fell to Hofstra with three straight 10-point quarters confirming a 68-49 loss to the Pride.

Despite the shooting troubles, Charleston raced out to an early 10-0 lead with Arynn Eady getting the Cougars rolling with a strong move in the paint. Huff hitting 1,000 points with her first shot from beyond the arc as CofC dominated the early exchanges.

Hofstra battled back to level the game up at 16-16, the teams exchanging baskets until Huff found space as the clock wound down to hit her second three and give Charleston a three-point lead at the end of the first.

A 12-2 run through the second forced a Charleston timeout, Hofstra taking advantage of a slow offensive quarter to pull into a double-digit lead at the half.

Huff hit double-digits for the 18th time this season in the third by finishing a fast break layup, Charleston forcing four straight Hofstra turnovers as the defense continued to create chances on the offensive end, but a second straight ten point quarter limited the damage to the Prides lead.

The teams went back and forth again in the fourth until Charleston used a 6-0 run behind Huff and Ford baskets. The Cougars defense continued to be effective, holding Hofstra to a 2:35 scoreless streak but Charleston struggled offensively down the stretch.

The Hofstra held a double-digit lead the rest of the way to take the 68-49 win and move Charleston to 7-20 on the season, 3-13 in CAA play.

Qoutables – Senior Guard Darien Huff
"First of all I couldn't have reached it [1,000 career points] without my teammates because they feed me the ball, get the ball to me in the right spot, that's all them… Getting 1,000 points means a lot… It's exciting to reach something that's such a big achievement."

Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
On Huff reaching 1,000 points…
"I wish that she would have gotten it at home, it would have been great for her to celebrate and achieve that in-front of her family and friends and our fans… Darien, she's meant so much to this program, a four-year starter, the energy that she bring, the tenacity that she brings, she's really changed her game and become the face of the program… For somebody who recruited her, saw her as this scrawny little girl from Kentucky, to see her as the young woman that she is now, I couldn't be prouder of Darien and the progress that she's made [through her career]."

On the 68-49 loss to Hofstra…
"It was one thing after another for us, not quite enough stops… We came out really well in that first quarter, outscored them, did what we needed to do, but that second and third… The second especially, we didn't shoot the ball well… Third quarter their shooters kept hitting and we just didn't get enough stops, we didn't quite put it all together and that's where it changed for us… Sunday we know we have another chance, another crack at it but we really have to focus in on what we're doing and just get it done."
