BOSTON, Mass. – A fourth quarter rally, including holding Northeastern scoreless from the floor over the last five minutes of the game, was not enough as the College of Charleston fell short in Boston on Sunday afternoon. Darien Huff and Deja Ford combined for 44 points, Huff setting a new career high with 23, as the Huskies took a 78-69 win in the Cabot Center.
Charleston began on the front foot, an 8-0 run in the opening exchanges highlighted by the first of Huff's points starting with a jumper, Ford knocking down back-to-back three-point shots.
Another 8-0 run by the Cougars pushed the lead to 21-12, Huff and Ford combining for 16 points through the first quarter, Arynn Eady adding five of her own.
Huff became the first student-athlete to hit double-figures in the second with her third three, she added another jumper for a 5-7 shooting performance through the first 13 minutes of the game.
Northeastern's Jess Genco responded, pushing the Huskies into a 43-33 lead midway through the second, Charleston stopped a 7-0 run by the hosts with free throws from Latrice Perkins.
Huff and Ford continued to be the offensive sparks for Charleston, both knocking down three's in the third but Charleston continued to struggle containing Genco, the senior hitting 20 points midway through the third push the Huskies lead back to 14 at 59-45.
Eady hit double-figures for the sixth time this season in the third, the Cougars offense contining to cut into the Huskies lead deep into the fourth. Ford hit a transition layup to cut the deficit to eight, Eady swatted away a Huskies effort, Ford again hitting from deep to cut the hosts lead to five.
Charleston held the Huskies scoreless from the floor for five minutes as the game wound down, Ford hitting back-to-back trey's, but the Cougars couldn't get closer than five as the offense went cold in the closing minute, Northeastern icing the game from the free throw line.
Charleston now looks to senior night on March 8 with a Friday evening matchup against UNCW. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m. at TD Arena with the senior class consisting of Huff, Bri Sullivan and managers Rikki Bethea and Hope Miller honored prior to the game.
