Cougars Rally in Second Game to Split Doubleheader with Hofstra

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Gracyn Thrasher and Brittany Vicary came through with clutch hits in a three-run fifth that rallied the College of Charleston to a 4-3 win over Hofstra and a split of Saturday's Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Patriots Point. The conference games were the first of the season for both teams.

The Pride had extended its winning streak to seven with a 3-0 win in the opener behind a five-hit shutout by Madison Burns. The Cougars are 15-14 overall while Hofstra is 13-12 with the final game of the series set for Sunday at noon.

Charleston trailed, 3-1, in the second game before loading the bases with one out in the fifth on a walk, hit by pitch and single by Dexlie Inman. Thrasher dropped a single inside the right-field line to tie it, and Vicary grounded a single through the right side with two outs to give the Cougars the lead.

A double by Hofstra's Jaycee Ruberti with one out in the seventh brought the lead run to the plate, but Devyn Losco was hit in fair territory by a bunt for the second out, and a ground out iced the Cougars' victory.

Izzy Berouty tossed 2.2 innings of one-hit, shutout relief to pick up her fourth win of the season. Inman and Thrasher both had two of Charleston's seven hits.

After spotting the Pride a run in the top of the first, the Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out in their half of the frame. Chandler Sparkman appeared to belt a grand slam, but her fly ball to left was caught on the warning track for a sacrifice fly, and Hofstra then scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to go in front.

The Pride scored all the runs it would need in the first game with a pair in the opening inning. Vicary had two hits for the Cougars, and Drayton Siegling suffered her first loss after five wins to start her collegiate career.
