Cougars Dominate Singles Play In 5-2 Victory Over Drexel

CHARLESTON, S.C.  – The College of Charleston women's tennis team used a series of strong performances in singles action to take down Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Christi Woodson picked up her fifth straight win in the number one spot to move to 12-6 on the season, Lily LaBiche winning her sixth straight to move to 9-9 on the year, 7-2 on court four.

The victory gives Charleston a 2-0 record against conference opponents with head-to-head matchups over the season helping the seeding for the CAA Championship in April.

Doubles play opened the day's action, the Dragons taking the point with wins on courts two and three. Woodson and Anastasia Palaska picking up the lone doubles victory for Charleston on court one, battling from behind to win 7-5 and improve their record on the year to 10-6 as a duo.

In singles action the Cougars came alive. Turner Yates racked up her 12th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2, victory over Anisiya Simpson to level the match up. Woodson giving Charleston a 2-1 lead with a straight sets 6-3, 6-4, victory on court one – the senior battling back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to pick up the win.

LaBiche made it 3-1 to The College with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Marta Martinez on court four, Catalina Medici putting Charleston out of sight with a 6-2, 6-3, win on court six.

Palaska went to three sets on court three, the junior taking the opening set 6-1, dropping the second 2-6, before winning the third 6-2.

Drexel claimed their solo singles point with a three-set victory on court two, Charleston picking up the 5-2 win to move to 11-8 on the season, 10-4 at Patriots Point, with the Cougars making it eight victories from their last 10 home matches with the win.

Charleston now looks to continue the strong home form with a 10 a.m. matchup on Saturday against Savannah State at Patriots Point.

Quotable – Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo
"I couldn't be more proud of the way the team responded after Drexel took the doubles point… I think it really helped, gave us a little momentum even though we'd lost the doubles point, Christi [Woodson] and Anastasia [Palaska] came back and won their doubles point and that carried over into singles where we won six of the first sets… That was a good complete match against a good, feisty, Drexel team so I couldn't be more proud of the girls for being 2-0 in conference play right now… We love playing at Patriots Point, the fans support pushes us over the top when we need it… We can't thank everyone enough for coming out and we're looking forward to a good home match this Saturday against Savannah State."
