CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Johnny Wang claimed the biggest win of his young career to complete a 4-3 come-from-behind victory for the College of Charleston men's tennis team, who handed UNC-Asheville their first loss of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman pair Ben Cawston and Wang held their nerves late in third sets with the match on the line, Cawston winning a third set to tie the match at 3-3 on court three, Wang clinching the victory on court four in three sets to give Charleston the win.
But it was the Bulldogs who took the doubles point, a convincing 6-0 win by the ITA/Oracle No. 1 ranked duo of Henry Patten and Oli Nolan dispatched the Cougars pair of Easton Thomas and Ksawery Pociej on court one.
Cawston and Robby Krick went the distance on court three, UNC Asheville clinching the point with a tiebreak win while #54 ranked pair Wang and Benedikt Henning went unfinished on court two.
Henning continued his fine singles form on court one. Knocking off Patten of UNC-Asheville in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to move to 9-1 in the number spot on the year.
Pociej also won in straight sets on court five, the sophomore from Poland taking down Olly Cull of the Bulldogs 6-4, 6-2, before the visitors battled back.
UNC Asheville took singles points on courts two and six, taking Cawston on court three and Wang on court four to a deciding set with Charleston needing to win both.
They did just that with Cawston first to finish in a 7-6, 0-6, 6-3, win to level the match at 3-3, Wang clinching the come-from-behind victory on court four 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, to move Charleston to 10-2 on the season.
The Cougars now look to a Monday matchup against Lehigh at Patriots Point, first serve is set for 4 p.m.
Quotable – Head Coach Jay Bruner
"What a fun match to coach… There are a hundred things that you have to adapt to and situations to handle during a college tennis match and it take experience to get to where you want to be... I think the boys are watching themselves become a better team every time we compete... We played a tough team today and found our way to the finish line with a great assist from Henning at court one and three great performances from underclassmen to clinch the win."
