Towson, Md. – Kelly Sinclair had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the College of Charleston to a 5-1 win at Towson in the opening game of a CAA doubleheader on Saturday. The Tigers then gained a split with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Cougars (19-22 overall) and Tigers (20-20) remain tied in the CAA standings with 4-7 conference records. The rubber game of the series is Sunday at 1:00.
Drayton Siegling came within one out of a shutout in the opener before settling for a five-hitter and the seventh win of her freshman season.
Brittany Vicary drove in two runs, and
Yari Felix reached base three times and scored twice.
The Cougars struck in the first when Felix walked and Sinclair drove an RBI triple to left for her third three-bagger in her last five games. An inning later,
Lexee Emanuel and
Dexlie Inman drew leadoff walks and both scored on a single by Vicary.
Charleston added to its lead in the fourth with three straight two-out hits. Felix singled, moved to third on a double by
Madi Brown and Sinclair dropped a base hit into shallow right to make it 5-0.
The Cougars rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second game, tying it in the sixth with another two-out uprising. Sinclair singled for her fourth hit of the day, and
Jenna Helberg, Emanuel and Inman all walked, with the latter forcing in a run.
Gracyn Thrasher singled to drive in Helberg, but the go-ahead run was thwarted when Emanuel was thrown out at the plate. Towson broke the tie and earned the split on a walk-off single by Madison Wilson with two outs in the seventh.
Thrasher had two hits and also scored the Cougars' first run on an RBI single by Vicary in the third.
