Cougars Edge Bucs to Sweep Season Series

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Madi Brown made a diving catch of a liner to shallow right with two on and two outs in the seventh to preserve a 5-4 win for the College of Charleston over Charleston Southern on Tuesday at Patriots Point.

The victory completed a season sweep for the Cougars (21-22) over their city rivals and was the 15th win in the past 16 games in the series.

The Buccaneers (16-31) got off to a fast start with three runs on four hits in the top of the first but were limited to only four hits the rest of the way by a trio of Charleston pitchers. Izzy Berouty went the first four innings and picked up her seventh win of the year, striking out three.

The Cougars evened it up with a two-out uprising in the second. Dexlie Inman started the rally with a double followed by consecutive singles from Gracyn Thrasher, Savannah Huff and Lauren Lozano and a wild pitch to make it 3-3.

Inman, Thrasher and Huff each had two of Charleston's eight hits, with Inman's double tying her with Madi Brown for the team lead with 12. The bottom four batters in the Cougar lineup accounted for seven hits in 11 official at bats and four RBI.

The Cougars went in front their next time up, capitalizing on two CSU errors, a sacrifice fly by Inman and an RBI single by Huff. Meanwhile, Berouty blanked the Bucs over her final three innings before giving way to the bullpen in the fifth.

Kylie Burke was perfect in two innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts, and Drayton Siegling allowed a pair of hits and a run in the seventh before the Brown catch short circuited the CSU comeback. Siegling gained her third save of the year.

The Cougars return to CAA play this weekend at James Madison and return home next Tuesday for a 5:00 game against Coastal Carolina.
