Woodson Named CAA Player of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – Christi Woodson has been named the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis Player of the Year in a vote by the leagues head coaches, becoming the first College of Charleston student-athlete to win the award in program history.

Woodson and doubles partner Anastasia Palaska were also tabbed All-CAA Doubles First Team with Eva Nyikos earning a spot on the All-CAA Singles Second Team in her first season as a Cougar.

Woodson, a senior from Melbourne, Fla., finished 2019 with a 17-7 mark in the number one singles spot, also finishing with a 5-1 record against conference opponents including a 9-1 mark over her last 10 matches. Over her career Woodson racked up 42 singles and 35 doubles victories for Charleston. Woodson makes history as the first Cougar to earn the CAA Player of the Year award and becomesjust the second student-athlete in the programs history to be named player of the year behind Christin Newman in 2013, who earned the award in The College's SoCon era.

Palaska earned a spot on the All-CAA Doubles First Team, alongside partner Woodson, for the first postseason award of her career. The duo finished with a 15-7 record in flight one, rising to #86 in the ITA/Oracle National Rankings after closing the season with victories over the 41st and 78th ranked duos.

Nyikos tabbed a spot on the All-CAA Singles Second Team after ending her first season at Charleston with a 9-7 record. The sophomore racked up eight wins in flight two for her first postseason award as a Cougar.

Quote - Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo
"We couldn't be more thrilled with Christi's improvement over her time at The College... Her daily work ethic is second to none... She was incredibly determined to lead this team this season and laid everything on the line through every match... She took advantage of coach Robb Stone's expertise with individual workouts and I truely feel that Coach Robb's coaching made the difference... It's a great accomplishment and well deserved for Christi... She not only had great success in singles play, but her and Anastasia Palaska were named All-Conference in doubles, entering the national rankings to solidify her position in a conference full of talented players."
