Cougars Set To Conclude Opening Weekend Against Georgia Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston Men's Soccer concludes its weekend opener in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Soccer Classic on Sunday, Sept. 1. The Cougars will face off against Georgia Southern at 4:30 p.m. at Patriots Point Athletic Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The College graduated eight seniors last season. Two All-CAA honorees return from last season including senior Tucker Heffron, who earned CAA All-Third Team honors, and sophomore Peter Dearle, who earned CAA All-Rookie Team honors. Heffron logged a team-high six goals, two of those being game winners, while Dearle started all 15 games last season and played the third most minutes on the roster with 1,321.
CofC return 19 letterwinners including four seniors, while adding 11 newcomers to the roster.
Last Time Out
The Cougars fell to Stetson in the season opener by a score of 1-0. CofC had an ample amount of opportunities to crawl back into the game after an early deficit.
The Opponents
Georgia Southern – Georgia Southern is coming off a season in which they recorded an overall record of 7-7-3 and a conference record of 2-1-1. Head Coach John Murphy is entering his fourth season at the helm of the program, posting a 24-23-7 overall record at GS. The Eagles graduated 2018 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year but return 16 letterwinners, including eight starters from last season. From those returning starters is the four defenders and goalkeeper. Among those defenders include senior co-captains Gonzalo Talavera and Justin Little.
Stetson – Stetson posted a 7-10-2 overall record and a 1-4-1 conference record in 2018. Head Coach Cristian Neagu is in the midst of his second season at the helm of the program and looks to follow up a season in which his team made a run into the ASUN Conference Championship match. The Hatters had an injury riddled season in 2018 but are fully healthy coming into 2019. Seniors Ian McCauley and Finn Busmann are among the four starters that got hurt before the season opener in 2018.
UNCW – The Seahawks are coming off a season in which they logged a 12-5-3 overall record and a 5-1-2 record in CAA play. UNCW made it to the CAA Conference semifinals but ultimately lost to Hofstra. Despite the loss in the conference tournament, UNCW earned a bid into the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year but fell in the first round to Furman 5-3 in PK's. The Seahawks bolster two Preseason All-Conference Team honorees.
