Middle Quarters Prove Decisive in Victory Over Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
College of Charleston outscored Winthrop by 33 points over the second and third quarters to overcome an early deficit in an 89-59 victory over the Eagles on Tuesday at TD Arena.

The backcourt duo of Tyler Collins and Tyler Gray combined for 38 points and 13 assists to lead the Cougars (2-2) to the largest margin of victory against a Division I opponent since a 76-37 win over UNCG on January 8, 2017. Chelsea Wooten came off the bench to add 16 points on six field goals including four from long distance.

Collins joined Wooten with four 3-pointers and led CofC with 22 points while dishing out six assists. Gray had 16 points and seven assists, both season bests for the freshman, and also made three steals. The Cougars finished with 12 3-pointers, the seventh most in a game in the Division I era, and have made 23 treys in the past two contests.

Arynn Eady was the fourth Cougar in double figures with 11 points while also reaching a milestone when she grabbed her 500th career rebound with 3:52 left in the second quarter. The junior forward ended the night with 501 caroms in just over two seasons.

Maleeah Langstaff led the Eagles (1-2) with 18 points and Madison Ervin added 13. The Cougars forced 29 Winthrop turnovers which they turned into 31 points. 

CofC trailed by nine after the first quarter before exploding for 28 points in each of the next two stanzas, including a 28-6 burst in the second to take a 39-26 halftime lead. Collins and Wooten both made three 3-pointers during the second 10 minutes.

The Cougars stayed hot in the third quarter, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor to increase their margin to 24 heading to the fourth. CofC led by as many as 33 in taking its 29th win over the Eagles in 33 all-time meetings. Freshman Elise Pearson, a graduate of Porter-Gaud, saw her first action of the season and hit a 3-pointer with her first collegiate shot.

The two-game homestand continues on Friday as part of a doubleheader at TD Arena. The women host NC Wesleyan at 4 p.m. followed by the men's game against SC State at 7 p.m.
