Conway, S.C. – The quartet of
Lexee Emanuel,
Payton Wade,
Brittany Vicary and
Gracyn Thrasher each hit two home runs and combined to drive in 21 runs to lead College of Charleston to a pair of wins on the second day of the Battle at the Beach.
The Cougars slammed five home runs, the second most in school history, in a 13-6 win over Jacksonville State and added three more in a 15-1 defeat of Delaware State to wrap up the day. Emanuel increased her four-year home run total to 15 and is tied with former teammate Sara Garcia for 10th in the school record book.
Vicary and Wade had the first two round trippers of their collegiate careers, and Wade added a double against Jacksonville State to give her five extra base hits in three games this weekend. Wade and Emanuel both had six RBI in the two wins on Saturday, Vicary had five and Thrasher added four.
The only time the Cougars had more than five homers in a game came against Appalachian State on March 31, 2007 when they smashed eight. The Cougars had eight extra base hits against the Gamecocks, the first time they reached that mark since March 3, 2010 against St. Bonaventure.
Emanuel got the party started with a three-run homer in the first inning against the Gamecocks, and Wade and
Chandler Sparkman had RBI doubles in the third to make it 5-0. After seeing its lead trimmed to one, Charleston erupted in the fourth as Emanuel, Vicary, Wade and Thrasher all homered in an eight-run uprising.
Summer Jenkins relieved Sparkman and went the final 4.1 innings, allowing only one hit and no earned runs while striking out three to pick up the win.Â
Vicary got the second game started with a leadoff homer en route to the first four-hit game of her career. Thrasher capped the four-run opening frame with a two-run blast, and Wade launched a three-run shot as the Cougars added four more runs in the second.
Charleston blew it wide open with seven in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run pinch hit single by
Lauren Lozano. Freshmen
Carli McCants and
Katie Freeman combined to surrender only three hits over the first four innings, with McCants fanning three, and
Kylie Burke finished with a 1-2-3 fifth.
The Cougars play Jacksonville State again tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. before concluding tournament play against host Coastal Carolina at 3:15 p.m.
