Cougars Fall to Jacksonville State to Conclude the Battle at the Beach

Box Score

Conway, S.C. – Jacksonville State used four big innings to post a 20-9 win over College of Charleston on the final day of the Battle at the Beach in Conway, S.C. The Cougars' game against host Coastal Carolina later on Sunday was cancelled due to impending rain.

Riley Miller led the Cougars (2-6) with three hits and four RBI, and Payton Wade wrapped up a red-hot weekend with three hits including her third home run of the tournament. Wade went 9-for-16, added three doubles, scored eight runs and drove in seven in four games.

Charleston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk to Gracyn Thrasher and two-run single by Miller. The Gamecocks went ahead with four in the top of the second, but Wade homered in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.

Jacksonville State appeared to break it open with six runs in the third, but again the Cougars responded with a run in their half of the inning and four more in the fourth. Miller contributed a double to knock in a pair to highlight the frame and reduce the deficit to one.

But it was all Gamecocks after that. Jacksonville State scored three in the fifth and seven in the sixth including a grand slam by Karsen Mosley and three-run shot by Ryann Luna.

After two tournaments on the road, the Cougars open at home this week as they play host to the Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point. The four-day event begins on Thursday when the Cougars take on Bradley at 5 p.m.
