Charleston, S.C. – College of Charleston head coach
Linda Kalafatis joined an exclusive group of 15 active Division I coaches with 1,000 wins when the Cougars downed Appalachian State, 1-0, on the second day of the Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point.
Kalafatis improved her career record to 1,000-630-2 in 31 seasons, including 192-155 in seven years with the Cougars, after
Summer Jenkins tossed a five-hit shutout and
Jenna Carter drove in the game's lone run with an RBI ground out in the third.Â
"I've so enjoyed my time at the four universities I've coached at. I've had so many terrific players, some of whom are my best friends now," said Kalafatis. "When I got into coaching I never thought I'd have a shot at this milestone. I took it game-by-game and year-by-year. It's nice to look back on the great teams I've been a part of and the players who I've been able to coach."
Jenkins struck out four and retired the side in order three times in her third career shutout. She worked out of a two-on jam in the seventh by inducing Gabby Buruato to ground out to
Gracyn Thrasher at first to secure the historic win.
Yari Felix reached on an error to lead off the third and moved up two bases on a single by
Brittany Vicary. Carter followed with a slow roller to short which easily brought home Felix for the game's lone run. Vicary had the Cougars' only two hits against App State's Kenzie Longanecker.
Delaney Smith singled with one out in the Mountaineer fifth but was picked off first on a peg from
Lexee Emanuel to Thrasher to thwart a potential threat.Â
The Cougars finish tournament play tomorrow with games against Virginia Tech at 1:30 followed by a contest against North Carolina Central.
