Charleston, S.C. –
Drayton Siegling pitched five scoreless innings in relief, and
Alondra Vicary hit a two-run homer to lead College of Charleston to a 4-2 win over North Carolina Central in the final game of the Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point.
Earlier in the day, the Cougars (4-8) dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 24 Virginia Tech and finished 2-2 over the weekend.
Siegling relieved starter
Chandler Sparkman in the third and allowed only two hits while retiring the side in order in four of her five frames. After the Eagles scored single runs in the first and second, Charleston struck back in the third when Vicary launched her second career homer over the fence in left center.
The Cougars took the lead the following inning, starting with an error and single by
Brittany Vicary.
Yari Felix stole home to put Charleston in front, and
Lexee Emanuel added an RBI single to cap the two-run inning.
NC Central threatened in the fifth with a runner at second and two outs. Joirea Dumas followed with a drive to deep center, but Felix robbed her of at least a triple with a running, over-the-shoulder catch to help preserve the Cougar lead.
In the first game of the day, Virginia Tech scored two in the second, and Olivia Lattin homered in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead. That was more than enough for pitchers Kaylee Hewitt and Keely Rochard, who combined for 13 strikeouts in the four-hit shutout.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Furman at Patriots Point.
