Box Score
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's soccer team (2-9-2, 1-3) grabbed its first CAA win of the season on Sunday, using a late goal to knock off Delaware (4-8-1, 1-2-1) on the road. The win improves the Cougars to 1-3 in conference play, while the Blue Hens fall to 1-2-1 in CAA action.
The first half featured a lot of defense. The Blue Hens attempted three shots in the opening period, while the Cougars only put up one shot. Senior keeper Meredith Holton made big two big saves in the first half, with one coming in the 16th minute and the other in the final minute of the opening half. The Cougars have been playing an excellent brand of defense in recent matches, and it carried over into Sunday's match.
In the second half, the Cougars kept Delaware from any serious scoring chances. It was not until the 66th minute that the Cougars had their first scoring opportunity of the second half. Freshman Mary Alexander hit the post with a rip and fellow freshman Delaney Dawes cleaned it up, but Delaware's keeper made a nice save to keep the match scoreless. Freshman keeper Savannah Barron, who entered the net for the second half, made her only save of the period in the 70th minute.
In the 78th minute, two Cougars juniors produced some magic. Olivia Freitas fed a perfect pass to Natalie Sgro who drilled it into the net to give CofC the late lead. The Cougars locked the Blue Hens down for the final 12 minutes and claimed the 1-0 road CAA victory.
What Coach Michner Had to Say
"t was a great result for our girls today. They have battled and played so well this season and haven't gotten the reward we've felt they had earned. I am so proud of their fight and the commitment that they played with on the field today. Delaware challenged us for 90 minutes and were so organized with their pressure. After some narrow misses, we finally got that moment of brilliance from Liv (Olivia Freitas) and Nat (Natalie Sgro) as they combined on the goal. So happy for them as they did exactly what we asked of them. A fully deserved win."
