Smith, Wierzbicki Power Cougars to Weekend Sweep of William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. --- Freshman Anna Smith hammered home a match- and season-high 19 kills and junior Lexi Wierzbicki added 15 of her own to lead the College of Charleston volleyball team to a 3-1 win over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play.
 
Charleston (10-7,3-3 CAA) won the match by scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-17 to pull even with Hofstra for fifth place in the CAA standings. The Cougars combined for 51 kills and a .268 hitting percentage while limiting William & Mary (3-6, 0-4 CAA) to a .184 attacking clip. Charleston finished the match with 53 digs, eight service aces and eight blocks.
 
Critical Point
With the score knotted at 10-10 in set three, Smith connected for her third kill of the frame to kickstart a 7-2 run for the Cougars. Charleston would go on to win the set, 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Key Cougars
  • Smith paced the attack with 19 kills – all in the final three sets – including seven in the second frame.
  • The freshman outside hitter finished with a .375 hitting percentage to go along with three aces and two blocks.
  • Wierzbicki delivered 15 kills, three digs and a pair of blocks while finishing with a .312 hitting percentage.
  • Jasmin Goei dished out a season-high 35 assists and added a team-best 12 digs to account for her second career double-double. She also posted three kills and two service aces.
  • Molly Russell chipped in three kills on eight swings without an error and collected a match-high five blocks.
Game Notes
  • Charleston hit .400 or higher in both the first and third sets including a .435 clip in the opening frame.
  • The weekend sweep marks the first of the season for the Cougars and the sixth time Charleston has swept the season series with the Tribe.
  • Junior Gabi Bailey contributed seven kills, nine digs and four blocks in addition to one service ace.

The Cougars return home on Saturday, October 9 to host Towson in the first of two matchups in CAA play. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in TD Arena.
