Late Goal Pushes Elon Past Charleston
10/7/2021 9:07:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's soccer team (1-9-2, 0-3) played its first midweek match in a month, traveling to Elon (6-4-1,2-1) for a CAA tilt on Thursday night.
The Cougars leaned on their defense in the first half, staving off multiple Elon attacks. Senior keeper Meredith Holton recorded all six of her saves in the first half.
Right before the intermission, a penalty in the box allowed the Phoenix to be rewarded with a penalty kick. Elon took advantage of the opportunity, getting on the scoreboard first and carrying a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Early in the second half, the Cougars found an equalizer. Freshman Faith Slimmer took a corner kick, perfectly setting up graduate student Leah Deutsch. Deutsch rose above the defense and headed the ball past the Elon keeper. At the 47 minute mark, the Cougars and Phoenix were knotted up at 1-1.
CofC had a couple scoring opportunities later in the half, with juniors Olivia Freitas and Grace Powell recording shots on goal. The majority of the second half went by quietly, before the match turned in the final minutes.
In the 87th minute, Elon pushed a goal past the Cougars. The Phoenix held on until the final horn, escaping with the 2-1 win.
