CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Olivia Mae Van Der Werff (Lansing, Kan.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the College of Charleston and join the Cougars' volleyball program in the fall of 2022 announced head coach Jason Kepner on Wednesday.
"We are excited to add Olivia Mae to the Cougar family," said Kepner. "She is a very versatile athlete and can play any front row position. Her ability to go off of one foot is really going to be a plus for this team. She is an extremely hard worker, great teammate and has a high volleyball IQ. We look forward to having her in the gym with this team next fall."
Van Der Werff comes to The College from Lansing High School in Lansing, Kan. where she helped the No. 21 (MaxPreps Top 25) Lions compile a 38-1 record and capture the 2021 5A State Championship. The 6-foot middle blocker finished the season with 437 kills and a .325 hitting percentage to earn a spot on the United Kansas Conference First Team. Van Der Werff starred for the Lions in this season's Kansas State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors in addition to being named the AVCA's Kansas High School Player of the Week on November 1.
"Everyone was so welcoming when I came [on my visit]," Van Der Werff said. "I feel like I belong at CofC and can make an immediate impact on the team and people around me."
Van Der Werff put together an outstanding junior season at Lansing as well totaling 385 kills and attacking at a .299 clip to earn United Kansas Conference Player of the Year accolades. The Lansing, Kansas native also garnered first-team all-state honors that season as well as 5A State All-Tournament Team recognition while helping the Lions to a runner-up finish in the state tournament.
