CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (3-0, 0-0) picked up its second road win in as many games as the visitor on Friday night, as the Cougars went into Norfolk State and pulled out a 66-62 victory. Charleston trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but a 3rd quarter rally brought the Cougars back into the game.
First Half
- The Cougars struggled to get into an offensive rhythm in the first quarter, shooting just 25 percent from the field while Norfolk went 7-of-12 from the floor
- Peyton Martin scored six of the nine CofC points in the opening period
- After the first, Norfolk held a 17-9 lead
- The second quarter was even more of a struggle for CofC on offense, but suffocating defense allowed the Cougars to outscore the Spartans 13-11 in the period
- At the half, Norfolk State led CofC 28-22Â
Second Half
- It did not take long for Charleston to find its offense in the second half
- With the Spartans leading 38-28, the Cougars embarked on an 18-2 run that surged CofCÂ ahead, 46-40
- Grace Abercrombie scored 9 points in the run, including two three-pointers
- At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Cougars led by a score of 48-43
- Norfolk State scored six straight points to open the 4th, finding themselves in front 60-59
- Both teams traded baskets for the next several minutes, and with 4:33 remaining in the game, Peyton Martin converted an and-one that gave CofC a 57-56 lead
- The Cougars began to gain separation thanks to back-to-back triples by Grace Abercrombie that gave CofC a 63-56 lead with 2:53 to go
- Norfolk would cut the Charleston lead to 64-62, but clutch free throws from Arynn Eady iced the game for the Cougars as they came away with the 66-62 road win
Key Performers
- Freshman Grace Abercrombie, fresh off a CAA Rookie of the Week award, exploded for 25 points and six rebounds. The freshman from Jacksonville, Texas made 5-of-11 triples
- Peyton Martin put together her best perfomance of the season, recording a double-double to the tune of 19 points and 10 rebounds
- Tyler Collins added 10 points
- Just five Cougars scored in the game, with Arynn Eady and Chelsea Wooten pitching in six points each

- Charleston led for just 10:12 of game time
- The Cougars forced Norfolk State into 27 turnovers that resulted in 26 CofC points
- Charleston shot 17-of-24 from the free throw line, including an 8-of-11 mark in the fourth quarter
