BOONE, N.C. – Luzy Lieger and Rhian Purves took home first place finishes to highlight the College of Charleston track and field team's performance at the App State Invite.
Lieger had a top mark of 3.66m (12 feet, 0 inches) to win the pole vault, and Purves crossed first in the mile with a time of 5:15.76.
"It's been two years since we've run an indoor meet, and it feels good to knock the rust off," said head coach Amy Seago. "We had good wins from Luzy and Rhian, and our young sprinters and jumpers had a solid start to their collegiate careers."
Kaitlynn Bailey led the sprinters by posting a 7.43 time in the 55 dash, the 15th fastest time in a field of 37 runners. She was followed by Lily Nowakowski (7.61) and Alicia Wilson (7.69).
Bailey (44.31) and Kayla Porter (44.32) paced the Cougars in the 300 and were 18th and 19th, respectively.
Bailey, Gianna Cucinotta, Nowakowski and Tonet Tallie had a time of 3:00.37 as the 4x300 relay "A" team, and Asiah Gadson, Lilli Sustaita, Wilson and Laurie Fogleman finished in 3:03.77 as the "B" squad.
"It's a good start to our season and allows us to set up their training going forward," said associate head coach Mike Tornifolio. "I'm happy with how they all executed their races today."
The Cougars resume their indoor season at the USC Invitational on Jan. 28-29 in Columbia.
