TOWSON, MD. – Tyler Collins and
Taylor Williams combined for 34 points to lead four College of Charleston players in double figures, but their effort was offset by a 28-point performance by Kionna Jeter in a 90-81 loss at Towson on Saturday.
Â
Collins finished with 18 points and Williams added 16, and the duo was joined in double digits by
Tyler Gray and
Chelsea Wooten with 11 apiece. Gray also paced the Cougars (6-5, 2-3 CAA) with eight boards and made four steals.
Â
Arynn Eady grabbed six rebounds to move past Patrice Bryant and into 10th place in school history with 574 in her career. Despite the work by Gray and Eady, the Tigers (8-3, 3-1) dominated on the glass with a 49-28 margin. Eady also blocked a shot to take sole possession of sixth place in the record book with 83.
Â
Jeter, who entered the game ranked sixth in the nation in scoring, eclipsed her 24.7 average and was joined in double figures by LaKaitlin Wright (17 points), Shavonne Smith (15) and Aleah Nelson (12).
CofC quickly erased an eight-point halftime deficit with a 14-6 run in the first 3:39 of the third quarter, tying the game at 45 on a layup by Gray. It stayed a nip-and-tuck game for the next nine minutes, with a bucket by Williams leaving the Cougars down only 65-62 with 7:22 remaining.
Towson took control after that, however, scoring the next 10 points to build a 75-62 margin. The Cougars had one more run in them, getting within 86-81 on a basket and free throw by
Latrice Perkins with 44 seconds to go, but could inch no closer.
The teams will conclude their two-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. at SECU Arena.
