GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kylie Burke tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief, and College of Charleston scored twice in the third to down host UNCG, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.
Burke entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the second and retired the side on a pop up to short. She went on to allow only three hits and struck out six to lower her season ERA to 2.14.Â
The Spartans had won eight in a row and were averaging more than 10 runs a game during that streak.
The Cougars got the only two runs they would need in the third when
Aniz Roman and
Jenna Carter set the table with leadoff singles. Following a wild pitch
Payton Wade drove a sacrifice fly to left, and
Riley Miller drove in Carter to provide support for Burke.
UNCG threatened with a two-out double in the fourth and leadoff two-base hit an inning later but stranded both runners. Burke then finished the game with a flourish, striking out two in a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
The teams wrap up their series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.Â
