GREENSBORO, N.C. – College of Charleston fell to UNCG in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, including an unusual end to the nightcap.
The Spartans took the first game, 9-1, before an umpire decision ended a Cougar rally in a 4-2 loss in the second.
CofC trailed 4-1 heading to the top of the seventh of game two when
Payton Wade led off with her third home run of the season.
Riley Miller followed with a single, and
Camden Carter dropped a double just inside the right field line to put the tying runs in scoring position.
Kayla Gutierrez lined a 1-1 pitch into center to apparently bring home Miller and pinch runner
McKenna Kelly, but the home plate umpire ruled that Gutierrez left the batter's box early, resulting in the final out of the game.
Cougar pitching limited the Spartans to only two hits, but both were solo homers by Maycin Brown and Katie Stettler.
Kylie Burke allowed only one hit and one earned run in 3 1/3 innings, and
Katie Freeman worked an inning and did not give up a hit.
The Spartans scored four in the first and three in the third, with five of the runs coming on homers, in the opening game victory.Â
CofC finishes its weekend Sunday with games in Charlotte against Campbell at noon and the host 49ers at 3 p.m.
