CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston sophomore pole vaulter Luzy Lieger has earned a berth to the NCAA Preliminary Round, which will be held in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 26-29. The women's pole vault is currently scheduled for Thursday, May 27.
Lieger made it into the 48-athlete field on the strength of a 4.00m (13 feet, 1 ½ inches) performance at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships three weeks ago which set the school outdoor record. She also holds the indoor mark at 3.80m (12-5 ½).
Lieger is the first Cougar pole vaulter to qualify for the preliminary round and first CofC athlete overall since Julisa Tindall in the high jump in 2017.
"I am excited that Luzy has qualified for the NCAA first round," said associate head coach Michael Tornifolio, who coaches the Cougar jumpers.
"This year has been a tough one for all athletes, and to be among the top 48 on the East Coast shows the hard work and sacrifices she has made. This will be great experience for her going forward."
