Charleston Falls to Bengals on Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit and nearly forced a decisive fifth frame before ultimately falling to Idaho State, 3-1, on Friday evening in the Cougars' opening match of the CofC Classic at TD Arena.
 
Junior Gabi Bailey paced the Cougars with 12 kills, 11 digs and five blocks to account for a double-double as Idaho State held Charleston to 41 kills and a .124 hitting percentage in the contest. The Bengals won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-10, 18-25 and 25-22.
 
Critical Point
After taking set one, 25-18, Idaho State opened the second frame with a 12-0 run en route to a 25-10 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Key Cougars
  • Bailey posted her third double-double of the season to lead the way for the Cougars.
  • Freshman Tynley Smeltzer recorded 17 digs, four assists and an ace in her first start wearing the libero jersey.
  • Claire Campbell chipped in nine kills, an ace and a match-high seven blocks.
  • Emma Appleman finished one dig short of a double-double with 22 assists and nine digs.
Game Notes
  • Idaho State accumulated 48 kills to go along with 11 blocks and a .221 hitting percentage.
  • Senior Molly Russell added six kills and hit .417 on the night for the Cougars.
  • Idaho State's Sadie Bluth recorded a match-high 16 kills while hitting .481 with four blocks.
Up Next
The Cougars return to the court on Saturday for two matches on the second day of the CofC Classic. Charleston will take on Campbell at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Florida A&M.
