DURHAM, N.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team rebounded from an early afternoon setback to Miami (Ohio) with a thrilling five-set win over Howard on Friday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium behind stellar performances from several players.
Charleston (4-2) opened the day dropping a 3-1 decision to Miami (Ohio) (1-3) by scores of 19-25, 25-15, 23-25 and 18-25 before rallying for a 22-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-16, 15-8 win over Howard (2-3) in the Cougars' second match of the Duke Invitational.
Critical Point
Trailing two sets to one and 4-0 in the fourth set against the Howard Bison, the Cougars strung together a 13-0 run – highlighted by four aces (including three straight) from Campion – to take a 13-4 lead and run away with the frame to force a decisive fifth set.
Key Cougars
- Gabi Bailey and Wierzbicki accumulated 25 and 24 kills, respectively, on the day including a combined 33 of the Cougars' 54 kills in the 3-2 win over Howard. Bailey added a personal-best 16 digs to account for her second double-double of the season against the Bison.
- Campion averaged 3.67 digs per set to lead the defense and accounted for six of CofC's 10 aces against the Bison.
- Freshman Emma Appleman dished out 39 assists and recorded her first collegiate double-double with 25 assists and 15 digs against Howard.
- Senior Molly Russell put down four kills and added a career-high seven blocks against Miami (OH).
Game Notes
- The Cougars outscored the Bison, 40-24, over the final two frames to complete the comeback.
- Claire Campbell accounted for 15 kills and 10 blocks on the day including a nine-kill, five block effort against Howard.
- Charleston, led by three kills each from Bailey, Wierzbicki and Kaylin Collins, hit .400 in its 25-15 second set win against Howard with 13 kills and only one error on 30 swings.
- The Cougars totaled 22 blocks on the day including 12 in the 3-1 setback to Miami (OH).
