
Bailey, Nowakowski, Smekrud Highlight Final Day of USC Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Kaitlynn Bailey, Lily Nowakowski and Kacey Smekrud ran their way into the Top 10 in College of Charleston indoor track and field history on Saturday during the final day of the South Carolina Invitational.
Bailey moved into sixth place in the 200 with a time of 26.32, and Nowakowski is now tied for 10th in the same event after posting a mark of 26.75. In addition to their performances in the 200, Bailey entered the record book in fourth place in the 60 meters on Friday while Nowakowski moved up to ninth.
Smekrud made her CofC debut after playing four seasons for the Cougar soccer team and immediately made an impact with a time of 2:21.98 in the 800 meters to move into eighth in school history. Emily Dorony turned in a time of 2:18.17, just .23 off her PR which is fourth in the record book.
Dorony and Smekrud finished 13th and 23rd, respectively, in a field of 73 athletes in the 800.
Kayla Porter set an indoor PR in the 200 (27.45), and Alicia Wilson had a PR at the same distance (27.81).
Bailey was joined by Asiah Gadson, Gianna Cucinotta and Laurie Fogleman in posting a time of 4:17.23 in the 4x400 meter relay. Dorony partnered with Cate Ambrose, Shannon Smith and Sophia Brown to finish the distance medley relay in 12:35.77.
"We had some highs and lows this weekend," said head coach Amy Seago. "We are learning to figure out our approach to racing and competing. With each competition we grow in experience. I am proud of our resilience and excited for positive performances to come."
The Cougars return to Columbia on February 18 for their final meet of the indoor season.
