Men's Basketball Primed for Hometown Charleston Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - For the first time since 2016, the College of Charleston men's basketball team will be participating in the Shriner's Childrens Hospital Charleston Classic. The Cougars tipoff game one of the tournament against the Davidson Wildcats Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in TD Arena.

STORYLINES
  • The Charleston Cougars and Davidson Wildcats will face off in the opening round of the Charleston Classic on Thursday, November 17. Despite playing played on John Kresse Court at TD Arena, the Charleston Classic is not hosted by CofC or considered a home contest for the Cougars.
  • The former SoCon rivals last met on December 6, 2016 when Cougars secured the 76- 61 win at home in Charleston.
  • This will be Charleston's first contest this season not against a participant in the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament (Chattanooga, #1 North Carolina, Richmond)
  • Pat Kelsey's squad is coming off of a thrilling 92-90 OT win over the defending A10 champ Richmond on Monday night in TD Arena. Three days prior, the Cougars gave #1 North Carolina all they had after leading 50-43 at half.
  • Reyne Smith tied the CofC single game 3-point record vs. Richmond with 8 from behind the arc. He also set a new career-high with 29 points going 8-16 from the field.
  • Senegal sensation Babacar Faye recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds vs. Richmond, both career-highs. His previous career-high was set vs. #1 UNC with 8 boards on 11-11.
  • This is the first time the Cougars will be competing in the Charleston Classic since 2016.
  • Davidson is 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 2018-2019 after taking down Guilford, Wright State and VMI.
  • The Wildcats' Foster Loyer ranks second in the nation in scoring with 28.3 points per game. He finished with 17 to go along with 4 rebounds and 5 assists in the VMI win. He is also the current A10 Player of the Week.
MAKING POSSESSIONS COUNT
  • The Cougars currently lead the CAA in scoring offense averaging 87.7 points per game, all against 2022 NCAA Tournament participants. The mark ranks 42nd nationally.
  • The Cougars have played a solidified ten-man rotation in their first three contests with all ten Cougars averaging at least ten minutes a game.
  • CofC has outrebounded all three opponents so far this season.

CAN'T STOP THE REYNE
  • Aussie native Reyne Smith tied the CofC single game 3-point record vs. Richmond with 8 from behind the arc. He also set a career-high with 29 points.
  • Smith was fouled on what could have been his ninth from the behind the arc. He successfully converted all three to help the Cougars reach overtime in the thrilling Richmond win.
  • The performance was a bounce back for the sophomore, who totaled three points at #1 North Carolina after dropping 24 in opening win vs. Chattanooga.
GAMEDAY REMINDERS
  • Even though the Charleston Classic takes place inside TD Arena, it is not a Charleston home contest.
