Cougars Fall Short in Physical Battle with Towson

Dimitirius Underwood piled in 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the loss

CHARLESTON, S.C.Charleston Basketball dropped a tight battle to league-leader Towson, 80-77, on Saturday night at TD Arena. The Cougars are now 14-12 on the season and 6-8 overall.

Senior Dimitrius Underwood secured his second straight double-double with a season-high 21 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Underwood led four Cougars in double figures with freshman Ben Burnham, sophomore Nick Farrar and junior Brenden Tucker tallying 13 points, 13 points and 12 points, respectively.

Charleston led for 22 minutes of gameclock, draining nine 3-pointers and shooting 51 percent from the field on a strong night offensively. Towson seized late momentum and came away with the win, though, behind 21 offensive rebounds and 19 CofC turnovers.

After falling down early in the first half, CofC surged in front behind 3-point shooting and Underwood's ability to finish in traffic. The senior point guard followed treys from Farrar and Tucker with back-to-back buckets in the paint to push the Cougars in front by one. CofC would swell its lead to seven at halftime and as many as 11 three minutes into the second half.

The Tigers chipped away at the deficit with second-chance buckets and trips to the foul line. Towson earned 32 trips to the charity stripe, including 25 in the second half alone to claw back in the game. After the Tigers stormed in front and held onto a 2-point edge with 11 seconds left, a Reyne Smith 3-point attempt spun out on CofC's final possession and Towson clinched the victory.
