Charleston Walks Off App State on Day One of Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Kelli Anne Carter lined a single to deep left to drive in Kayla Gutierrez in the bottom of the seventh, giving College of Charleston a 5-4 win over Appalachian State on the first day of the Cougar Classic at Patriots Point.

The Cougars dropped a 6-0 decision to UConn later Friday evening. Charleston plays two more games on Saturday, facing App State again at 3:00 followed by a contest with Western Carolina at 5:30.

After the Mountaineers tied the game at 4 in the top of the seventh, Gutierrez reached on a dropped third strike and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by the App State catcher. Two batters later, Carter ripped a shot to the fence in left to end the back-and-forth contest.

The Cougars led 2-0 after a two-run single by Payton Wade in the first, fell behind 3-2 after 5 ½ and retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Mia Dittoe and a bases loaded walk to Jenna Helberg. 

Drayton Siegling worked the final two innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run, to pick up the win.

Charleston outhit the Huskies, 6-5, in the nightcap but left eight runners on base. Payton Lemire gave up only two hits and one earned run in 4.1 innings in taking the loss.
