PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Charleston Basketball nearly led wire-to-wire on Saturday night at Drexel, but the Dragons' late frenetic run sealed a come-from-behind 80-79 win over the Cougars in Philadelphia. The game marked CofC's 15
th contest this season decided by five or fewer points. Charleston is now 16-13 overall and 8-9 in CAA play.
With the loss, CofC is now locked into the No. 6-seed at the CAA Tournament next weekend. The Cougars will face Hofstra in a Sunday night showdown in Washington, D.C.
On Saturday, seniors
John Meeks and
Dimitrius Underwood led a strong effort on the road at Drexel as the Cougars were playing in their third away game in five days. Meeks returned from injury with an efficient 16 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. Underwood continued his recent run of dominance with a season-high 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Underwood's offensive firepower in the first half helped CofC build a double-digit lead. He scored 17 of his 23 in the opening frame and beat the halftime buzzer with a fadeway jumper to give Charleston a 42-31 advantage at the break.
Drexel cut it to seven with 11:43 left, but
Brenden Tucker and the Cougars punched back with an 8-0 run of their own. Tucker scored all 13 of his points in the second half, pushing CofC's lead out to 15 before the Dragons mounted their comeback. Drexel steadily chipped away over the final 11 minutes of action and finally seized the lead on its final offensive possession of the game, getting loose for a dunk with less than two seconds left.
Key Cougars
- Dimitrius Underwood was electric yet again with a new Div. I-high 23 points on 10-of-15 FGs, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
- Junior Brenden Tucker 13 points on 5-of-10 FGs and snagged six rebounds.
- John Meeks returned to action and shot 7-of-13 on his way to 16 points and six boards off the bench.
- Freshman Raekwon Horton grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and posted nine points, coming within a point of his first career double-double.

- CofC led for 39:41 of gameclock before Drexel's game-winning dunk.
- Fifteen of CofC's 29 games have now been decided by five of fewer points. The Cougars are 9-6 in those games and 5-5 in league play after suffering Saturday's loss.
- Dimitrius Underwood is now averaging 18.2 PPG over the last five games, scoring at least 14 points in all five contests.
