Cougars Close Out Regular Season With Senior Day Win Over Northeastern, 73-64

Tyler Collins led the way with 22 points

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (17-12, 9-9) used a 46-point second half to put away Northeastern on Saturday afternoon inside TD Arena.

The Cougars led 27-26 at half, but began to pull away from the Huskies following a 19-6 run to open the third quarter. Tyler Collins helped close the game out at the foul line, finishing the day 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.

The Cougars sent their four seniors out with their ninth CAA win of the season, tying the program's record of conference victories since joining the CAA in 2013-14. In Charleston's first year in the conference - also the 2013-14 season - it posted a 9-7 mark but had not reached nine league wins again until this season. The 17 overall wins are also the most since the 2013-14 team went 19-15. 

This season's 17 regular season wins are the third most in Charleston's division-one history.

First Half

  • Tyler Collins opened the scoring for the Cougars with consecutive three-pointers in her first start since January 30th
  • Northeastern made five of its first seven shots to grab an early 10-8 advantage with 5:00 to go in the first quarter
  • After falling behind 12-8, the Cougars held the Huskies to just two points for the last 5:00 of the first quarter
  • CofC ended the first period on a 10-2 run to take an 18-14 edge into the second
  • The Cougars made 4-of-6 attempts from deep in the first quarter
  • A 10-5 Northeastern run gave the Huskies a 24-23 lead at the second quarter media timeout
  • After both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes, two free throws from Arynn Eady helped CofC regain the lead, 25-24 with just over 2:00 to go until halftime
  • At the half, the Cougars led 27-26 over Northeastern
  • Tyler Collins led the way with 11 points in the first half, while Latrice Perkins and Jenna Annecchiarico each added six points
  • The Cougars attempted 12 more field goals in the first half than the Huskies

Second Half

  • The Cougars used a 19-6 third quarter run to open up a 44-32 advantage with just under 4:00 to play in the third period
  • In the 19-6 surge, the Cougars got six points from Eady and five each from Perkins and Annecchiarico
  • A 7-2 spurt in response by Northeastern trimmed CofC's lead back down to nine, with the Cougars 
  • The Huskies scored the final five points of the quarter. The Cougars led 50-44 after three periods of play
  • Latrice Perkins scored seven points on 3-of-3 shooting in the third
  • With Northeastern trailing by six, Anika McGarity connected on triples in back-to-back possessions to extend Charleston's lead to 57-46 with 7:30 to go
  • With just under 5:00 remaining, Northeastern had cut CofC's lead to 60-54
  • Arynn Eady fouled out with 2:28 remaining and the Cougars leading 64-57
  • Two perfect trips to the foul line for Tyler Collins helped keep the Huskies at bay as CofC led 70-64 with 35.2 seconds left in the game
  • With 21.3 seconds to go, CofC held tight to a 71-64 lead
  • Another perfect trip to the line by Collins helped seal the deal as CofC grabbed a 73-64 victory in its regular season finale
  • Perkins (14) and Collins (11) combined for 25 of CofC's 46 points in the second half
  • Anika McGarity scored eight points in the final 20 minutes

Team Stats

  • Charleston attempted 70 field goals to Northeastern's 52
  • The disparity in field goal attempts helped CofC win by nine despite shooting just 32.9 percent from the floor while the Huskies shot 42.3 percent from the field
  • The Cougars shot 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) from the free throw line
  • Charleston forced Northeastern into 23 turnovers on the day. That is the third most turnovers forced by CofC in conference play
  • CofC assisted on 14 of its 23 made baskets

Key Cougars

  • On senior day, it was two senior guards who led the way for Charleston. Tyler Collins finished one off her season-high in scoring, tallying 22 point and going 11-of-12 from the free throw line
  • Latrice Perkins scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Its Perkins' fifth 20-point game of the season and her third in the last five outings
  • Jenna Annecchiarico once again flirted with a triple-double, tallying 11 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds
  • Arynn Eady picked up double-double number 13 on the season, totaling 10 points and 11 boards to go with a steal and a block
  • Anika McGarity added eight points

  • The Cougars will now head to Philadelphia for the CAA Tournament. Charleston will be the #5 seed and face #4 seed Elon on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
