Arynn Eady named CAA Defensive Player of the Year
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Colonial Athletic Association announced its 2021-22 postseason awards and all-conference teams on Wednesday and the College of Charleston was prominently featured. Three Cougars earned all-conference distinctions, tied for the most players to receive honors. The four overall awards are the most for Charleston since joining the CAA.
Arynn Eady was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year following a season in which she averaged 2.1 blocks and 2.1 steals per game. Eady had games this season of 7, 6, and 5 blocks, as well as games of 6, 5, and 4 steals. This gives Charleston four CAA Defensive Player of the Year Awards since joining the league in 2013. Bre Bolden won the award three consecutive seasons from 2015-2017.
Arynn Eady was also named to the All-CAA Third Team in addition to receiving DPOY honors. The senior forward was a force in the paint for CofC, racking up 13 double-doubles this season. Eady averaged 11.9 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per contest while leading the CAA in field goal percentage (58.4%). Eady had two games with more than 16 rebounds and scored a career-high 27 points in CofC's first ever win at Drexel on February 6.
Jenna Annecchiairco was tabbed All-CAA Second Team following an outstanding first season in Charleston. Annecchiarico led the Cougars in scoring (16.6 PPG), assists (6.3 APG), steals (2.9 SPG), and free throw percentage (87.5%). Her 6.3 assists per game and foul shot percentage of 87.5 both topped the CAA and ranked top 20 nationally.
Annecchiarico scored a career-high 36 points in Charleston's win over Towson on January 21 that broke the CofC division-one era record. Her scoring average of 16.6 points per game is the highest by a Cougar since Bre Bolden's 17.9 PPG during the 2016-17 campaign. The junior from Baldwin, New York posted eight games of eight or more assists this season.
Freshman Grace Abercrombie was named to the All-Rookie team following a season in which she averaged 7.5 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game this season. Abercrombie is no stranger to such distinctions, as she earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors for each of the first three weeks of the 2021-22 season.
Abercrombie's coming out party happened in Norfolk, Va. on November 19. The 6'1" wing made five three-pointers on her way to a 25-point, six-rebound outburst to lead the Cougars to a 66-62 win at Norfolk State. Abercrombie also started her CAA career off with a bang, scoring 10, 13, 19, and 13 points in her first four career conference games.
The Cougars will begin CAA Tournament play on Friday, March 11 against Elon. Tip will be at 2:30 in Philadephia at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on the campus of Drexel University. The game can be streamed live on FloHoops.
