MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Prior to Sunday's game against Appalachian State, the College of Charleston women's soccer team honored seniors Grace Powell, Olivia Freitas, Lauren Sandidge, Natalie Sgro and Jenna Snead.
The celebration continued once the game started as each senior played a key role in the Cougars' 2-1 win over the Mountaineers at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
Powell and Snead scored first half goals, Sandidge contributed an assist, Freitas had a team-high six shots and Sgro started and helped the Cougars control the midfield as Charleston (6-2) won their fourth in a row and remained undefeated in five home games.
"It was an incredible day at Patriots Point as we honored our seniors and secured another great win," said head coach Christian Michner. "App State was a tough opponent, and we were never able to take our foot off the pedal. We got two great goals by seniors as that class led the charge from the start.
"I'm so thankful to have coached this group and know they've laid a strong foundation for our program moving forward."
Sandidge and Powell teamed up to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, with Powell extending her streak of consecutive games with a goal to four. She increased her season total to six, the top mark in the CAA, and Sandidge had her first career assist.
The Mountaineers (1-3-3) ended Charleston's defensive scoreless streak of 329:47 in the 29th minute on a goal by Stephanie Barbosa. The Cougars responded less than four minutes when Snead scored her first goal in two seasons in a Charleston uniform, with Hannah Stanhope credited with the assist.
Freitas nearly made it a two-goal margin, but her shot in the 82nd minute hit the right post.
The Cougars finished with a 19-12 advantage in shots and took seven corners to only two for App State. Katie Carrino had three saves in the opening half, and Savannah Barron had a pair while playing the final 45 minutes.
Charleston plays its final non-conference game of the season on Friday at Furman and return home on September 22 to open CAA play against Drexel.
