Chucktown Sound, the Cougarettes Dance Team and the CofC Cheerleading program are dedicated to increasing the overall spirit of the campus community by performing and cheering at CofC sporting events, serving as ambassadors for the college, and being role models of leadership.
The Chucktown Sound preseason camp was opportunity for new members to learn and experience a smaller scale version of the band's performance book for the upcoming season. Camp also gives veterans members a chance to bond with new members and prepare for two on-campus performances prior to the start of the fall semester.
"I'm proud of the work put in by both our rookie members and veteran leadership," said director Christopher Gongora. "The future looks bright for Chucktown Sound, and I'm very much looking forward to unveiling some new wrinkles that we have in store for fans this season."
The College of Charleston Cougarettes Dance Team returned to campus July 25 for preseason training and to learn the hip-hop choreography for their camp home routine taught by breakout choreographer J'Mya Brown. The team attended UDA College Camp in Scranton, Pennsylvania August 11-14 and represented the College well in all areas of camp, including earning 2nd place in the home routine competition and a superior Gameday routine award. All dancers earned a superior recognition in their individual evaluations.
The team has already completed their choreography for UDA Nationals in January where they will compete a jazz routine choreographed by Leah Brinkley Evans and a hip-hop routine choreographed by Kristin Daniels from Tribe99. The team, led by Erica Slaughter and Remy Hayes, is working with CofC Cheer and Chucktown Sound to make this basketball season is one our fans are sure to remember.
The CofC Cheerleading program attended NCA College Camp in Myrtle Beach from August 12-14. The team returned with numerous accolades including a Spirit Stick, two blue superior ribbons for Game Day routine, a blue superior ribbon and second place overall Rally Routine and a bid to compete at NCA College Nationals in April.
"The interactions with teams and mascots from other schools was one of the most invaluable parts of the camp experience for us," said head coach Sam Pairet. "It really allowed our athletes to go outside of their comfort zone."
Peyton Raybon, Madison Zucker and Kaylee Dell were all awarded Collegiate All-American titles while Clyde was award best overall mascot, beating out school such as Clemson, USC, Coastal Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest, and Pittsburgh.
"Camp was structured in a way that allowed coaches, mascots, and cheerleaders to attend their own "classes" throughout the days," said Pairet. "When cheer was learning new stunting techniques & skills, Clyde was busy at the local trampoline park building his awareness as a mascot by jumping around and engaging with children, all while us coaches were learning ways to challenge our teams and lead them to success."
