CHARLESTON, S.C. – Legendary College of Charleston men's soccer coach Ralph Lundy has been named the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Walt Chyzowych Fund.
The award is presented annually in recognition and thanks for a lifetime of dedication to preserving the spirit of the game of soccer, advancing its level of play and promoting its growth among youth and adults nationwide.
"I am so happy for Coach Lundy. He has had an amazing career in this game," said Keith Wiggans, who succeeded his former coach at the helm of the program when Lundy retired following the 2019 season.
"The Walt Chyzowych Lifetime Achievement is an incredible award, and Coach Lundy is definitely well-deserving."
Lundy enjoyed a tremendous 33-year run at The College with 323 wins, five conference championships and five trips to the NCAA Tournament. He ranked fourth among active Division I coaches in victories at the time of retirement. He won a total of 453 games in 44 seasons, including the first 11 at Erskine.
The highlight of his career came in 1994 when the Cougars won a school-record 19 games, went 8-0 in the TAAC and defeated Charlotte and NC State to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The following season, Charleston earned its first national ranking by Soccer America, finishing the season at No. 19.
Lundy also led the Cougars to NCAA appearances in 1995, 1996, 2004 and 2010 and picked up wins over South Carolina and East Tennessee State, respectively, in the final two trips. The soccer field at Patriots Point was named in his honor during his final season in 2019.
"Even with all his wins and titles, his focus has always been on the player," said Wiggans. "He has grown players and coaches, but even more so he has grown people. Me, along with anyone who has played for him, has confidence that he will always support them in any endeavor in their life."
