MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Monmouth handed College of Charleston a critical setback in its hopes for a berth in the CAA Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Cougars on Thursday at Ralph Lundy Field.
Charleston needs wins in its last two games against William & Mary and Elon and help from other teams to move into one of the three remaining available spots in the six-team field. UNCW currently holds sixth place with 14 points, five more than the Cougars.
Monmouth scored in the 10th minute on a goal by Loren Gehret off a corner kick, but seven saves by Savannah Barron kept it close until the 85th minute. Barron made a spectacular save, but Summer Reimet gathered in the rebound and scored to secure the win for the Hawks.
Olivia Freitas took four of Charleston's 10 shots while Monmouth fired 15 including nine on target. The Hawks also produced eight corner kicks to one for the Cougars.
The game against William & Mary on Sunday at noon will be the final home game of the season for the Cougars and will include a celebration of the women's soccer program's 30th anniversary.
