Cougars See Season End By Losing at Delaware

NEWARK, DEL. – College of Charleston saw its season come to an end Saturday with a 2-1 loss at Delaware.

Charleston finished with an overall record of 6-6-5 (2-4-2 CAA) with the six wins the most since earning eight victories in 2017. This is the second straight season the Cougars saw their postseason hopes dashed on the final day of the season.

The Cougars needed a win or tie and some help to earn a spot in the six-team CAA Tournament. But the Blue Hens quickly put them in a hole when they scored in the sixth minute and then added an insurance goal in the 33rd.

Leonardo D'Ambrosio gave the Cougars some hope with just over four minutes remaining when he scored his sixth goal of the season, but Charleston was unable to get the equalizer on a corner in the 90th minute. Along with his eight assists, D'Ambrosio finished the year with a team-high 20 points.

"There is never an easy way to end a season," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "We were too inconsistent throughout the year. Good games, bad games. Good 45 minutes, bad 45 minutes. In this league you need to be consistent, and we were not. We need to be tougher and have more grit. We just need to get better.

"I love this group and am proud of the effort they put in. They gave me and this program everything they could."
