RICHMOND, Va. – College of Charleston volleyball junior libero Tynley Smeltzer was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for a fourth time this fall, as announced Monday by the conference office.
Smeltzer finished the weekend with 5.00 digs per set posting 40 in a weekend split at Northeastern capped off by 27 digs in a five-set comeback win Sunday. Smelter's efforts on the backline headlined a Charleston defense that held Northeastern to just .168 on the attack over eight sets.
The junior Savannah, Ga. native has averaged 5.28 digs per set since moving to the libero position at the beginning of CAA play, .67 better than the rest of the league. During that time, Smeltzer has 20-plus digs in seven contests.
Monday's accolade is the fifth in Smeltzer's career and fourth this fall. Smeltzer is the only student-athlete in the CAA to win the award multiple times and has done so four times including a stretch of three consecutive weeks from Sept. 25 through Oct. 9.
Smeltzer and the Cougars return home for another crucial CAA series as Hofstra comes to town just one game up in the standings and only four regular season matches left on the schedule. Seven teams currently sit within the No. 4 spot in the standings including Charleston and Hofstra.
