RICHMOND, Va. – College of Charleston volleyball junior libero Tynley Smeltzer was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for a third-straight Monday, as announced by the conference office.
Smeltzer finished the weekend with 5.33 digs per set posting 32 in a six-set weekend sweep of rival UNCW, who came into last weekend in a three-way tie for first. Smeltzer had a team-best 16 digs in both matches as the Cougars held a conference opponent below .200 for a fifth and sixth time in their first eight league matches.
The junior Savannah, Ga. native has averaged 5.55 digs per set since moving to the libero position at the beginning of CAA play, .52 better than the rest of the league. During that time, Smeltzer has had 16-plus digs in every single match and led the Cougars backline in all eight.
Monday's accolade is the fourth in Smeltzer's career and third-straight. Smeltzer is the only student-athlete in the CAA to win the award multiple times and has done so three-straight weeks.
Smeltzer and the Cougars take their CAA-leading defense on the road to league newcomer Campbell for a pair. Both matches are slated for 1 p.m. starts and can be viewed on FloVolleyball.TV.
