Cougars Conclude Regular Season with Strong Showing at USC Open

Columbia, S.C. – Rhian Purves and Luzy Lieger won event titles, and Emma Fortuna and Emily Dorony entered the record book in the high jump and 1500, respectively, to lead the College of Charleston track and field team at the USC Open Saturday in Columbia.
Purves won the invite section of the 1500 and lowered her PR with a time of 4:28.41. The mark keeps her in third place in school history but moved her within .32 of second place and .81 of the top mark.
Lieger won the pole vault by clearing 4.11m (13 feet, 5 ¾"). Fortuna had the best high jump performance of her freshman season with a height of 1.58m (5 feet, 2 ¼") to finish second at the meet and tie her for ninth in school history. Kylie Dougherty added a PR of 1.55m (5'1") to come within .01 of a spot in the record book.
Dorony ran a 4.43.22 in the open 1500 and entered the record book at No. 9. She finished second while two other Cougars – Shannon Smith (PR of 4:48.95) and Cayden Crismon (4:49.49) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in a field of 45 runners.
Emily Kreek had a solid performance in the 100 hurdles with her time of 15.33 moving her up one spot to seventh.
In addition to her showing in the 1500, Purves led a trio of Charleston runners to finish in the top 20 out of 68 in the 800. Her time of 2:14.35 placed her fifth, and she was joined near the top of the field by Dorony (14th, 2:18.15) and Meike Kalus (20th, PR of 2:19.50).
Kaitlynn Bailey led the Cougars in the sprints, lowering her school record in the 100 by .11 seconds to 12.04 while also pacing the team in the 200 with a time of 25.46. Three Charleston runners – Alicia Wilson (26.01), Kirsten McKenna (26.89) and Asiah Gadson (27.12) – had PRs in the 200.
Sophia Brown finished 10th in the 5000 (18:23.50), and Alexandra Ottomanelli just missed a spot in the record book with a PR of 1:08.33 in the 400 hurdles.
The Cougars return to action May 5-6 when they compete in the CAA Outdoor Championships in Williamsburg, Va.
