WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Luzy Lieger won her second CAA pole vault title this year, and Rhian Purves qualified for a pair of event finals to lead the College of Charleston track and field team Friday in Williamsburg, Va.
Lieger, who captured the conference indoor championship in February, stood atop the podium again on Friday when the senior cleared 4.10m (13 feet, 5 ¼ inches) to earn All-CAA outdoor honors for the third time in her career. Lieger took third in 2021 and second a year ago before breaking through with the title this spring.
Purves began her day by advancing to the finals of the 1500 with a time of 4:33.27, the fifth-fastest time in the field. She came back shortly thereafter to post a PR of 2:11.96 in the 800 to qualify sixth. Her time in the 800 kept her in third place in school history and was just .73 shy of second.
Meike Kalus had a time of 2:16.48 in the 800 to take over the No. 8 spot in the Charleston record book. Andie Harding was less than a half second from also reaching the top 10 with her mark of 2:17.96. Grace McGrew (2:19.60) and Abbey Arnett (2:20.27) also had PRs in the 800 as did Emily Dorony (4:40.89) and Shannon Smith (4:45.85) in the 1500.
Kaitlynn Bailey competed in all three sprints and fell just shy of PRs in two of them. She had a mark of 12.09 in the 100, only .05 behind her school-record time, and fell .22 short of her career best in the 400 after crossing in 58.08.
Emily Kreek finished the first day of competition in the heptathlon with 2,634 points, good for sixth place with three events remaining Saturday. Her best event was the 100 hurdles, earning 779 points with a time of 15.48, while also running the 200 in 26.56 and posting distances of 1.49m (4 feet, 10 ½ inches) in the high jump and 9.49m (30 feet, 5 ¾ inches) in the shot put.
