CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston cross country teams make the short trip up I-26 Friday to open their 2023 campaign at the Buccaneer Invitational on the campus of Charleston Southern. The men's 6k race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the women's 4k at 9:45 a.m.
The meet is the first of seven this season for the Cougars. Also competing will be teams from The Citadel, Coastal Carolina, SC State, Allen, Coker, Claflin, USC Beaufort and Newberry.
"We are looking forward to getting the season started," said assistant coach Chris Bailey. "We've had a strong two weeks of training, and this is the first opportunity to test ourselves against familiar competition on a course all our returners have seen before."
The meet should prove to be an emotional one for Charleston as it marks the final event in head coach Amy Seago's 20-year career with the Cougars. Seago announced her decision to step down last week with Bailey, who is in his third season at his alma mater, assuming the role of interim cross country head coach on September 5.
"I'm excited about what the season holds for this phenomenal group," said Seago. "I have the privilege to send them off one more time. This is a great crew of men and women who have much to achieve. I have confidence in them and the leadership that's in place to help them reach their potential.
"May this be the start of a special era for the Cougars."
The women's team returns all five scorers from last year's CAA Championships, led by graduate student Rhian Purves as well as Hannah Wise, Sophia Brown, Shannon Smith and Cayden Crismon.
The men return three of their top five runners from the conference meet, including top finisher Hammer Blair, Dylan McTigue and Jackson Reid.
