CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston returns home Saturday night for a 7 p.m. game against UNCW at Ralph Lundy Field.
The match is a battle between two teams off to outstanding starts. The Cougars (2-0-3, 1-0-1 CAA) are ranked third in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region poll, one spot ahead of the Seahawks (4-1-1, 0-1).
The five-game unbeaten streak is the longest to start a season since the 2009 team opened the year with five straight wins. It is the best stretch at any part of a season since 2017 when they went on a 6-0-3 run that ended with an overtime loss to UNCW in the CAA semifinals.
Charleston has not played since a 0-0 draw at Northeastern last Saturday. The Seahawks have won three in a row, all by shutout, including a 2-0 win at South Carolina on September 5. UNCW also has a 1-1 tie against then-No. 9 Clemson on its resume.
The stingy Cougar defense has allowed only four goals in five games, and Olly Marshall ranks fourth in the CAA with an 0.80 goals against average and third with an .800 save percentage. Six different players have scored with Peter Thomas leading the team with two goals and five points.
Gabe Mercer has a team-best three goals for the Seahawks, and Ethan Newsome has two goals and two assists. Jacob Randolph has played all 540 minutes and has an 0.83 GAA and .773 save percentage.
UNCW holds an 11-7-4 lead in the series and is 4-0-2 in the last six meetings. The Cougars are looking for their first win over the Seahawks since a 2-1 victory in Wilmington on October 11, 2017.
