
Cougars Open Indoor Track Season at Gamecock Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston opens up its 2024 indoor track campaign this Saturday at the Gamecock Opener. This will be the first of five indoor meets culminating at the CAA Championships in New York City.
This is the second year in a row that Charleston has traveled to the Gamecock Opener, and the first of four times the Cougars will be in Columbia this indoor season.
The Cougars are hoping to build off a 10th place finish in the CAAs last year including conference pole vault winner Luzy Lieger. Lieger holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault.
"We are excited to get the chance to compete. Distance is coming off an exciting season with several new personal best and top-10 marks, and I am excited to see what they do on the track. As for the sprinters and jumpers, this opens up their competition season and they are excited to compete after some great fall training." Interim Head Coach Michael Tornifolio stated about the upcoming season.
Charleston also returns many of their other top athletes from last year including Kaitlynn Bailey, Tonet Tallie, Rhian Purves and Emily Kreek.
Bailey ranks third in school indoor history in the 55, 60 and 200 meters. Tallie ranks third in the pole vault and Purves places second in the 800 and 3000 and third in the mile. Kreek took eighth place in the pentathlon at the conference meet last year and is fifth in the the Cougar record book.
