Charleston Falls to Utah in NCAA Tournament

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – College of Charleston lost to No. 17 Utah in straight sets (21-25, 19-25 and 15-25) Thursday evening in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
 
Caitlyn Callahan recorded a team-best eight kills and seven blocks for the Cougars, while Hannah Scott added 19 assists and nine digs.
 
Charleston finished the season 25-9 overall and while winning the CAA regular season title and conference championship.
 
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST UTAH:
  • Charleston tallied eight blocks in set one with Callahan being part of seven of those.
  • The eight blocks were tied for the most in a frame this season.
  • Scott, Emily Banitt and Tynley Smeltzer led the defensive attack with nine digs each.
  • Six different Cougars had multiple blocks, including Banitt, Scott and Emily Dykes.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston faced Utah for the first time in program history.
  • The Cougars set a program record of 348 total blocks in 2024.
  • Charleston has had 10-plus blocks in 8 of its 12 NCAA Tournament matches.
  • Caitlyn Callahan's 7 blocks tied her with Tiffany Blum (2004) for the most by a Charleston player in an NCAA Tournament match. Callahan achieved the mark in just one set.
  • Callahan has 7-plus blocks in a match eight times this season.
  • Callahan's 155 blocks this season are fourth all-time.
  • Allie Holland finished the match with six blocks, one why of tying Blum and Callahan for the most in an NCAA match.
  • Emily Banitt's 1,367 total attacks in 2024 are the third-most in a single season in program history.
