CHARLESTON, S.C - Charleston baseball played host to the Nebraska Cornhuskers Thursday afternoon in game one of a four-game set. Charleston led most of the game after taking a 2-1 lead in the third. The lead grew larger with a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-1. In the ninth, Nebraska took advantage of an error and pair of walks to eventually have the bases loaded down 5-3 with no outs. A one-out two-RBI single from Riley Silva tied the game at five. The Huskers scratched across a run in the tenth to take the contest 6-5, giving the Cougars a first defeat of the season.Â
Charleston starter
Hayden Thomas gave up one run in the first before shutting down the Huskers attack for the lone run over four innings.
Alex Lyon came on in relief and pitched well, giving up just one base runner in four innings, striking out three.Â
Charleston's offense had a productive day at the plate with RBI singles from
Dariyan Pendergrass and
Cole Mathis.
Dylan Johnson also brought in a run on a squeeze play to score
Avery Neaves. Charleston's last run in the eighth came from a wild pitch that scored
Cole Mathis.Â
In the top of the ninth, Charleston brought on
Davis Aiken for the save. After an error, Aiken struggled to find the zone before being pulled for
Emmett Bice. Bice was able to keep Nebraska from taking the lead with a few big outs while the winning run was on third. Bice could not keep the Huskers off the board in the 10th however as a Cole Evans fielder's choice brought in Clay Bradford to give Nebraska the lead.Â
The Cougs brought the tying run to second in the bottom half of the 10th but Nebraska's Tucker TImmerman was able to get
Luke Wood to ground out sharply, wrapping up a 6-5 comeback win for the Huskers.Â
